Last Thursday night I had the chance to visit Topgolf Atlanta with a few of my friends. If you know me, you may be confused as you know I’ve never golfed before (we’re not counting mini-golf). However, I was excited to test out my skills at the sport and also have a night out to have fun and catch up with my group.
For those of you not familiar with Topgolf, it’s a pretty unique facility. It offers competitive golf games for all ages and all skill sets (including those who have never golfed before). Players hit golf balls which contain a computer microchip that tracks each shot’s accuracy and distance traveled. Points are awarded for hitting targets on the field, and you can actually see where every shot lands.
In addition to the game play, each Topgolf also offers an upscale experience complete with tasty food and beverages, good music, lots of games and even climate controlled bays (they’ll be comfortable even during the winter months!), not to mention hundreds of HDTVs. And if you want to get serious about your skills, Topgolf even offers lessons, leagues and tournaments. (To learn more about Topgolf, visit www.topgolf.com.)
So how did I do? Surprisingly well. What I really liked about Topgolf was that I could enjoy it as much as my fiancé (who actually knows what he’s doing). After a handful of missed swings, I finally hit the ball, and I found instant satisfaction when it rolled into one of the larger holes. Each one of those holes on the course has sectors in it, so if getting hole-in-ones is what you’re best at, you can still do that here while challenging yourself just as much as those of us who are novices.
Notice the ball is still there on that above picture. Finally I got the hang of it though. Even if my form left a little to be desired.
After this outing, I finally understood the appeal of golf as a leisure activity. It’s an activity where you can constantly challenge yourself to get better, and while you could argue that’s the goal with any sport – this isn’t one that requires you to train and workout constantly. This particular take on golf that Topgolf provides reminds me a lot of bowling – no matter the skill level, you’ll have a good time.
That being said, all the guys with us knew what they were doing and had rather amazing form at it. For example, see Henry below.
Aside from the gameplay, the food is amazing… Take a look below.
Our whole experience was a part of the First Timers Club. If you’re thinking that sounds a little dirty, you’re not alone. Once I checked out Topgolf’s video, I found myself giggling. I like a brand that knows how to have a little fun.
The purpose of the First Timer’s Club is to help newcomers overcome some of the hurdles that they encounter during their first time (at Topgolf). Many people think the facility is only for those that know how to golf. I can safely say that half of my group had never played golf before, so we’re definitely not golfers. This was our first time, and we absolutely loved it.
Anyone new to Topgolf can join the First Timers Club now through October 31, 2015. By joining, you’ll receive a free Lifetime Membership and $10 off Game Play. Sign up at www.firsttimersclub.com!
A special thank you to Topgolf Atlanta for an amazing night! We weren’t golfers before last Thursday, and I’m not really sure we can call ourselves that even now… But we had a blast and are officially hooked! We may already have our next Topgolf trip planned to the new Midtown location.
